Here are my top ten films, of 2019, in no particular order! For the most part, I was able to do videos for all of these, however, the ones at the bottom, I had planned to do reviews, but I either didn’t have enough time or wanted to keep the experience the way it was without analyzing it too much.
Let me know what your favorite movies were this year!
The Nightingale
A Hidden Life
Toy Story 4
1917
Downton Abbey
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
The Kid Who Would Be King
The Kid Who Would Be King, is probably my second favorite film that explores Arthurian legend (only just slightly behind the 1981 John Boorman masterpiece, Excalibur). What The Kid Who Would Be King, does best is that it finds the balance of staying true to the original legends while it appeals to those who are not familiar with those legends. I grew up reading the stories of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and I really love what they were able to do here.
Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is peak Star Wars for me, the action, excitement, twists, fun! While yes, the film has its issues with its pacing and some scenes lacking better details that would have enhanced the conclusion to 42 years of storytelling even more, The Rise of Skywalker made me feel like the kid I once was watching Star Wars for the first time. It made me feel all of the great feelings I had growing up experiencing the re-releases (second movie theater experience), prequel and sequel trilogies in theaters with my family and friends feelings like having a larger purpose, to never give up hope, and that through teamwork and love, we can conquer all.
SHAZAM!
SHAZAM! was one of the biggest surprises of 2019 in so many ways. Up to that point in the year, I was feeling a little bit of superhero fatigue and I went into the film not as excited as I was coming out of it. I had so much fun in SHAZAM! from Zachary Levi’s youthful and heroic performance, to the surprise of how biblical the themes were and even secret set design references, I really enjoyed the film, and even rank it pretty high on my all-time best superhero films list.
